As our supervisor, Bob Cosby has worked to make sure our voices are heard in Powhatan’s local government – standing up for our common sense conservative values.

Bob Cosby loves Powhatan County and wants to make sure we protect our key services, our schools and law enforcement, while at the same time making sure our taxes aren’t too much of a burden on our people.

Efficiency and Accountability

As a farmer and small businessman, and now as a retiree, Bob Cosby knows first hand the importance of making sure our county government operates in the most cost efficient manner possible.  Every dollar our county can save, every service we can streamline, and every cost-saving idea we can implement will help our hardworking taxpayers here in Powhatan.  We must strive every day to keep our local government operations as cost efficient as possible, always bearing in mind that our taxpayers foot the bill for every dollar we spend in our county government.

Quality Education

As a father and a grandfather, Bob Cosby values the important role our teachers and parents play in supporting Powhatan’s schools.  It takes more than tax dollars and buildings to educate our young people – it takes parents, teachers, and citizens who demand accountability and results from the investment we make in our schools.

Bob Cosby is proud of the progress that has been made in Powhatan schools and commends our school staff and parents for the success of our educational system.  Our schools have come a long way in Powhatan, and Bob Cosby is grateful to our teachers and parents who have made our school system one of the most highly regarded in the area.

Our young people have more opportunities than ever to achieve success, and Bob Cosby is excited about the future and the potential our young people have to take advantage of the technology and advanced curriculum we have in our schools.  Whether it is training for the workforce or preparation for higher education, we owe it to our children to make sure our schools have the resources they need to help prepare them for the future.

While we owe our young people the best education we can provide, we must demand accountability and results to make sure our tax dollars are used most effectively in our school system.

Bob Cosby is committed to making sure that our schools meet the needs of our community and that we give our children the foundation they need to be successful in life.

Holding the Line on Real Estate Taxes

Powhatan County must hold the line on real estate taxes so that our citizens will be able to afford to live in Powhatan.  Powhatan must offer the maximum tax relief that Virginia state law allows for the elderly and disabled.  Our schools, law enforcement, rescue squad and fire department must be adequately funded, but we must hold the line on our real estate levy so that Powhatan’s hardworking taxpayers are not overburdened and taxed out of the county.  Bob Cosby will do everything within his power to make sure that Powhatan’s taxes remain as low as possible.

Economic Development to Attract New Businesses

One of the keys to holding the line on real estate taxes is to attract new businesses so that Powhatan has a broader tax base.  We must reduce our dependence on residential real estate taxes and obtain more revenue from new businesses in Powhatan rather than from homeowners and hardworking taxpayers.

We need to increase revenue for Powhatan County rather than increasing real estate taxes on our homeowners.  Powhatan is working to bring water and sewer lines along Route 60 to increase commercial development and bring new job opportunities and added tax revenues to the county.  We must do everything we can to have a healthy business climate in Powhatan so that we can attract quality businesses in the right areas.

We need to encourage our citizens to support our local businesses so that they can succeed and contribute to Powhatan, both through tax revenues and as supporting members of our community.  Economic development has been and will continue to be a top priority for Powhatan’s local government.

A Comprehensive Plan for Powhatan’s Future

Powhatan’s citizens have worked hard to make sure that Powhatan remains a great place to live, work, and raise our families.  We must always plan for the future.  Citizen advisory boards and work groups must be given the tools they need to put together recommendations about Powhatan’s present and future that reflect the wishes of the community and the needs of our people.

We must explore every option available to help protect our farmlands and scenic countryside through land-use taxation for agriculture and forestry, incentives, tax credits and conservation easements.  As a farmer, Bob Cosby loves Powhatan’s rural atmosphere, and he will do everything he can to help keep Powhatan a beautiful and scenic area to call home.

Citizen Input and Participation

Powhatan is blessed to have some of the most active and community-minded citizens any locality could have.  From our fire departments and rescue squad to the volunteers for the YMCA, Relay for Life, Christmas Mother program, Habitat for Humanity, Performing Arts Foundation, parent-teacher organizations, youth athletic associations, Ruritan and Lions Clubs and so many other groups, Powhatan’s people have always answered the call when our community has a need.  Our citizens have participated and made so many contributions through volunteer leagues, school organizations, and our churches and religious groups.

Just as these groups have helped meet the needs of our community, our citizens have served on advisory boards and committees to give insights and recommendations about the issues facing our county and best ways to plan for Powhatan’s future.  We need to do everything we can to encourage citizen participation and input in all aspects of Powhatan’s local government.

Making Our Voices Heard

Now more than ever, Powhatan’s local government needs the guidance of the people to chart the best course for our future.  We must take the time to study the issues, weigh the options, and act in the best interests of Powhatan.

Since first taking his oath of office thirty-six years ago, Bob Cosby has approached each issue with the same principle:  is it right for Powhatan?

We must work together to answer that question – is it right for Powhatan?  If the answer is yes, we’re up to the task.

We need leaders who will do what is right for the people of Powhatan, not partisan politics and grid lock.  Our people deserve nothing less than our best efforts and commitment to protect and improve our wonderful county.

For our Supervisor Bob Cosby, that effort has been the commitment of a lifetime.  And it represents the solemn promise he makes to the people of district three – that he will always do what is right for Powhatan.
